OITI Representative Attends 80th ESCAP Commission Session “Youth Leadership in Digital Innovation for Sustainable Development and Climate Action in Asia and the Pacific”

On April 23, 2024, Ms. Tran Phuong Mai, Project Management Officer at the Open Innovation and Technopreneur Institute (OITI), represented the institute at an online event organized by ESCAP in collaboration with UNDP. The event aimed to convene stakeholders to discuss the role of youth in utilizing digital innovation, including artificial intelligence (AI), to advance the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and climate action in the region.

During the panel discussion, Ms. Bui Thanh Hang, National Agency for Technology Entrepreneurship and Commercialization Development (NATEC), Ministry of Science and Technology of Vietnam/Vice Chairwoman of the OITI Science Council, shared insights into NATEC’s role in the context of Vietnam’s efforts to promote innovation and entrepreneurship. Currently, NATEC is actively implementing activities to support the national innovation ecosystem in Vietnam through innovative, scientific, and technological initiatives. Ms. Bui Thanh Hang also highlighted that the Vietnamese Government has issued numerous policies and mechanisms to support entities within the ecosystem, particularly focusing on fostering talent incubation and nurturing Vietnamese talents. She further outlined four barriers in the leadership of today’s youth regarding innovation and entrepreneurship: (i) Limited access to resources; (ii) Lack of advisors and mentors; (iii) Difficulties in commercializing and scaling-up projects; (iv) Insufficient entrepreneurship and innovation training programs for sustainable development in Vietnam.

Ms. Tran Phuong Mai, Project Manager at OITI, who had the opportunity to share OITI’s initiatives to promote innovative entrepreneurship with international colleagues. OITI is currently implementing activities to foster talent incubation and technology experimentation, promoting research stemming from academic institutions to address current sustainability challenges and green transitions. The initiative to establish the Open Innovation Hub – SoiHub in Ho Chi Minh City, is powered by OITI, NATEC, Saigontel, ADB, and other organizations, aims to create an open innovation space to attract talents, empowering Vietnam’s young generation to operate the innovative startup ecosystem. Additionally, Ms. Tran Phuong Mai highlighted other initiatives that OITI is implementing, including programs on innovative entrepreneurship training, innovative teaching methods for students through case study analysis applications; the Open Innovation Challenge platform to connect corporations, localities with innovative solutions, and technologies from young startup businesses; and Open Innovation Day initiative to connect and introduce potential startup projects.
