Following up on the discussions from October 25, 2024, OID will continue the journey to explore sustainable solutions, focusing on two key topics:

  • Topic 3: Sustainable development of the agricultural supply chain in the context of climate change in the Mekong Delta.
  • Topic 4: Building a 3S (Smart, Sustainable, and Safe) transportation system.

TOPIC 03: SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT OF AGRICULTURAL SUPPLY CHAINS IN THE MEKONG DELTA IN THE CONTEXT OF CLIMATE CHANGE

CURRENT STATE OF AGRICULTURE IN THE MEKONG DELTA

The Mekong Delta has been heavily impacted by saltwater intrusion, which has altered the soil and water environment. By 2025, the region aims to improve infrastructure, reduce agricultural labor, and adapt to climate change while developing an agricultural economy integrated with services and industry, moving towards a green and sustainable agriculture model.

CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR THE MEKONG DELTA

  • International organizations such as the World Bank and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) are providing financial support to develop climate adaptation projects, improve irrigation infrastructure, and research new crop varieties suited to the region’s conditions.
  • The area is promoting emission reduction solutions in agriculture, such as the “rice fields with flowered banks” ecological model, straw reuse, and the use of organic fertilizers, which help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and aim for sustainable production.
  • Businesses in the Mekong Delta face challenges related to limited capital, technology constraints, and awareness of the transition to a green economy.

TOPIC 04: BUILDING A 3S TRANSPORT SYSTEM (SMART, SUSTAINABLE, AND SAFE)

GLOBAL TRENDS:

  • In Q2 of 2024, sustainable transportation has seen several key milestones, such as the implementation of green transport plans in cities like Metro Vancouver and Regensburg, along with the rise of electric vehicle charging management software.
  • The rapid development of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) has brought numerous benefits to smart sustainable cities, including enhanced connectivity, improved quality of life, and better urban environments.

PRACTICAL IMPLEMENTATION OF SMART TRANSPORTATION (ITS) IN VIETNAM:

Vietnam is moving towards developing a sustainable transportation system, committed to reducing carbon emissions and building green transportation in line with global sustainable development goals.

OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES FOR THE 3S TRANSPORT SYSTEM:

  • The government emphasizes the transition to green energy in the transportation sector, aiming for net-zero emissions by 2050.
  • Efforts are being made to promote the use of green energy, establish public charging stations, and adjust policies to support electricity pricing for these stations.

CASE STUDY:

Vietnam plans to launch the North-South high-speed railway project, spanning over 1,500 kilometers, in the 2026-2027 period. This aims to develop multimodal transport infrastructure and enhance the nation’s competitive edge.
